Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other.
Partners may be married or not married; living together, separated or dating.(Domesticviolence.org). Domestic violence involves any  unhealthy act to cause physical, mental, psychological, spiritual and emotional damage. This is an old concept and it has attracted global attention there by international organizations and even individuals have shown interest in acts of such kind.

Some Examples of abuse include:
-Name-calling or putdowns
-keeping a partner from contacting their family or friends
-Withholding money
-Stopping a partner from getting or keeping a job
-Actual or threatened physical harm
-Sexual assault
-Stalking
-Intimidation

Studies have shown that violence can be criminal and it includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), sexual abuse (unwanted or forced sexual activity), and stalking. Although emotional, psychological and financial abuse are not criminal behaviors, they are forms of abuse and can lead to criminal violence. All other forms of violence become criminal when the victim can no longer swallow it.

WHO CAN BE A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
The truth is that ANYONE CAN BE A VICTIM! Victims can be of any age, sex, race, culture, religion, educational background, employment or marital status. Although both men and women can be abused, most victims are women.  we decide to focus on women because women are fragile and they are the most abused set of human beings in the world. Women are to be respected, loved and taken care of with soft hands. Violence on women have caused lots of harm to destinies of women especially the young ones and its high time to put a stop to this ugly menace.

Children in homes where there is domestic violence are more likely to be abused and/or neglected. Most children in these homes are aware of the violence. Even if a child is not physically harmed, they may have emotional and behavioural problems.

EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON WOMEN:
After a thorough search, I realized that the effects of domestic violence on women can not be over emphasized and they are real as anything.
It is true that many abused women find it difficult to function in their daily lives because of the mental, physical and all other effects of domestic violence. Because of domestic violence, women are absent from work due to injuries  and it becomes expedient that they visit the doctor. This has often caused them to lose their jobs. Victims are usually stigmatised and they feel ashamed that their partners abuse them. They equally see themselves as unworthy of love, thereby suffering from a significantly diminished self-perception. Because of their feelings of low self-worth, these women become isolated from friends and family and do not participate in social activities common to others in their demographics.

Domestic violence takes many forms and can happen all the time or once in a while. An important step to help yourself or someone you know in preventing or stopping violence is recognizing the warning signs in the chart below.

This chart uses the wheel to show the relationship of physical abuse to other forms of abuse. Each part shows a way to control or gain power.

THE CANDLE is bringing this knowledge to everyone to understand the implications of domestic violence on women and how destructive it can be. THE CANDLE advocates for a safer society for women and children. Women needs empowerment and they need attention.

THE CANDLE has chosen this part because women are mostly abused and unfortunately only few percentage of the world knows that women carry the world and several generation in them. Remember this quote by Shedy Elisha that - "Destroying a woman is like destroying a whole generation."
